Pornography, The Stealth Intruder
In times past, parents took every precaution to protect their family from any intruder that looked to gain access to their family. The last line of defense was the threshold of their homes. A parent could control who or what entered into their castle. Times have changed and, with it, technology. Today, many intruders gain entrance to the home by means of technological stealth.
Among the most common familial intruders is internet pornography. This intruder has gained a foothold through the simple fact that it is more accessible within the home via the internet. We know that:
- In 1999, 47 percent of every American household had the internet access.
- By 2006, 84 percent of every American household had access to the internet (Kaiser Family Foundation).
- A 2008 study on emerging young adults revealed that 86 percent of men and 31 percent of women admitted to viewing pornography at least once a month.
The fact remains that parents must think through our strategies to protect our families from enemies “abroad and at home.”
