2010 Diocesan Catechetical Conference

Saturday, October 23, 2010; 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

 

The 2010 Diocesan Catechetical Conference will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Reston, Reston, Virginia. The theme for this year is "Catechesis, an Encounter with God's Enduring Love". The keynote speaker this year is Rev. J. Brian Bransfield, STD, the Assistant General Secretary of the USCCB. The opening Mass will be celebrated by our Bishop, Most Rev. Paul S. Loverde.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE WORKSHOPS FOR THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE

 

REV. PAUL DELADURANTAYE, S.T.D.

Fr. deLadurantaye is Diocesan Secretary for Religious Education and the Sacred Liturgy for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. He holds a doctorate in sacred theology from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies. Fr. deLadurantaye is an assistant professor of theology at the Notre Dame Graduate School and for the Master Catechist Training Program. He also serves as a Judge for the Arlington Diocesan Tribunal and has written several articles for scholarly journals.


Our Life in Christ: Moral Catechesis

Sessions 1 & 2

This workshop will consider how our call to Christian holiness and perfection is rooted in Christ’s invitation to follow Him and is lived out in the moral decisions and choices we make. The Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, growth in virtue and the formation of conscience will be explored as aids in the task of developing a moral life rooted in love of God and neighbor, and directed to eternal life as our final destiny.

REV. JUAN PUIGBO

El Padre Juan Puigbó fue ordenado sacerdote en Venezuela el 24 de marzo de 2001. Estudió la Licencia en Teología Sistemática en The Catholic University of America (2004) y el Master en Matrimonio y Familia en la Universidad de Navarra, España (2006). En el 2004 el Cardenal Theodore E. McCarrick nombró al P. Puigbó Director de la Oficina de Asuntos Hispanos de la Arquidiócesis de Washington cargo que desempeñó hasta el 2007. También ha sido Director del Sol Vocational Institute (2007-2010) que ofrece servicios para la pastoral vocacional y juvenil de parroquias y diócesis en el país. También ha sido Delegado de los Sacerdotes Operarios Diocesanos en los Estados Unidos (2006-2010). Con los años se ha ido especializando en temas de familia y discernimiento vocacional con aplicaciones pastorales para programas parroquiales y diocesanos. El P. Puigbó es autor de diversos libros y ha participado en programas de radio y televisión.

Identidad, diversidad e integración. ¿Tres conceptos en conflicto en relación? La cultura hispana necesita una respuesta pastoral adecuada. Este taller ofrece las herramientas pertinentes para responder a las necesidades pastorales de la comunidad hispana en los Estados Unidos.

DELORES NELSON

Delores Nelson is a native Washingtonian. She has been married for 42 years and is the mother of 4 adult children and 12 grandchildren. She earned an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from National University in San Diego, California in 1984 and a Masters in Computer Information Systems in 1990 from Strayer University. In recent years she earned a Master of Science degree in Theology from the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College in 2003. Over the years, she has served in the catechetical ministry in various capacities as a Youth Minister, Catechist, and since 1994, as the Director of Religious Education for St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Clifton. Delores is currently the president of the Catechetical Leaders of the Diocese of Arlington (CLDA) and is a facilitator for the Protecting God’s Children Program for the Diocese of Arlington.

Realistic tips for living holy and ordered lives in the face of a 25 hour a day schedule. We will look at real time-lines for planning day-to-day activities (sample planner provided) which will ensure the inclusion of prayer, sacrifice, and work all for the glory and honor of God. RON BOLSTER

Ron Bolster is the former Director of the Office of Catechetics for the Diocese of Peoria, joined the Catechetics faculty at Franciscan University in 2004. Having established a catechetical institute for Peoria, Ron brings his expertise in catechist training, Christian Initiation, and administration to the program. A 1997 graduate of the University, he holds an MA in Theology with Catechetical Certification. His undergraduate degree is from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Before leaving for Peoria he served on the staff of the Office of Catechetics writing catechetical materials. At that time he also served as a consultant for RCIA to the Archdiocese of Washington, DC. He has been active in parish RCIA and the Neocatechumenal Way. He and his wife Andrea reside with their seven children in Steubenville.

The Mission of the Church

Session 1 only


“Evangelization is the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity.  She exists in order to evangelize.”  (Evangeli Nuntiandi 14)  This session gives into the richness of the Great Commission, and identifies the key components of the missionary activity that is the Church.  We give detailed definition to the Church’s mission and looking at the essential characteristics and tasks of evangelization and catechesis, with a particular focus on the Catechumenate as the ideal model for all catechesis. 

Understanding Catechesis

Session 2 only

“The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ…” (CT 5)  The work of catechesis is not just “education”, but “intimacy with Christ”.  This session looks at ways to insert teens into the Deposit of Faith through Scripture and the Catechism.  “The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends.”  (CCC 25)

REV. PAUL SCALIA
Fr. Scalia is one of nine children born to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and his wife, Maureen, parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Great Falls. He attended Langley High School in McLean and graduated in 1992 from the College of the Holy Cross in Worchester, Mass. He applied to the Arlington Diocese and was accepted to Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. After completing one year of theological studies at the Mount, Fr. Scalia was sent to Rome to study at the North American College. He was ordained a deacon Oct. 5, 1995, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and was ordained a priest for the Arlington Diocese in 1996. His assignments have included St. James, Falls Church, St. Patrick’s, Fredericksburg and he is currently Pastor at St. John the Beloved in McLean.

In this workshop, a catechesis on the Catholic understanding of the passions (emotions, feelings, and how they ought to be integrated, controlled, and appreciated) will be explored.

SISTER CLARE HUNTER, F.S.E.

Sr. Clare Hunter, F.S.E. is the Director of the Respect Life Office for the Arlington Diocese. She has a B.S. in Corporate Communication and Media, from Southern Connecticut State University: a Masters in Theological Studies from the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, in Washington, D.C.; a Masters in Education Administration from the University of St. Thomas, in Houston, Texas.


Akward Moments: Answering Those Tough Moral Questions

Sessions 1 & 2

How do you handle those awkward moral questions in a classroom full of kids? This session gives a theological overview and practical suggestions on how to discuss and teach tough moral issues in our culture today.

LOYES SPAYD

Loyes received her Master’s degree in religious education from the Catholic University of America. She has been in catechetical ministry for 35 years as a parish catechist, a parish DRE, and has served in three Diocesan offices. She also served as a Pastoral Life Director in a parish in Baltimore. She has written two books, several articles, and presently is a contributing author to the “Fashioning Faith” website for the Center for Ministry Development. She is currently DRE at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Vienna. She is the mother of three adult daughters and grandmother of five. She is being sponsored as a speaker by Pflaum Publishing.

 

RCIA: Part II: The Kids! Do We Have It Right Yet?

A pastoral look at the implementation of the Rite of Children who have reached catechetical age. What are some of the issues and concerns? Which children should really participate? How do we involve the families? How do you discern conversion in a child? What does an inquiry session look like? Come! Bring your questions! We’ll talk!

DANIEL MULHALL

Daniel S. Mulhall currently serves as the National Catechetical Advisor to RCL Benziger, which is sponsoring him for this event. Dan recently served as staff to the USCCB’s Committee on Catechesis and was involved in the creation of the National Directory for Catechesis. He holds a MA in Theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and an MA in Adult Christian Community Development from Regis University in Denver. He is a nationally know and respected writer and speaker on catechetics and pastoral planning. He and his wife, Kathleen, have been married for 30 years with three young adult children and one grandchild.

 

Engaging Parents in the Faith Formation of their Children

Sessions 1 & 2

There is a great deal of concern within the Catholic educational community about parent's lack of involvement in the faith formation of their children. This presentation will explore the root causes of that seeming indifference and offer suggestions on steps that can be taken to encourage and promote more active parent engagement. This will be an interactive presentation, designed for fluid give and take between participants and presenter.
