Nov. 14-20: Discover Catholic Schools Week
Schools across the Diocese of Arlington are gearing up to welcome prospective students and parents to open houses and other special events during Discover Catholic Schools Week. This initiative raises awareness of the value of a Catholic school education for children and gives parents the opportunity to visit one or several Catholic schools in their area. Fifty schools in the Diocese of Arlington provide challenging academics, formation in the Catholic faith and a safe environment for over 17,500 students. For more information about participating schools, and to view a video about the importance of a Catholic education featuring students, faculty and Bishop Paul S. Loverde, visit here.
Nov. 29: Bishop Loverde to Explain Catholic Social Teaching at Theology on Tap
Bishop Loverde will conclude the fall lineup of Theology on Tap (ToT) with a talk entitled, “I Give You This Command, Love Another: An Overview of Catholic Social Teaching.” The Bishop’s talk is part of the Fall 2010 theme: “Love One Another: Exploring the Meaning of Christian Love.” Each Monday evening from Oct. 25 to Nov. 29, several hundred young adults attend ToT at Pat Troy’s Pub, Alexandria. A popular program that originated in Chicago, ToT combines educational discussions about living the Catholic faith in today’s world with an opportunity for fellowship among young adults in the Northern Virginia area. Nov. 25: Bishop Loverde to Serve Thanksgiving Dinner at Christ House
Christ House, a homeless shelter in Alexandria founded in 1973 and managed by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington, serves 20,000 meals annually to the less-fortunate. Christ House also offers housing to 16 men each evening. In this spirit of charity, Christ House provides Thanksgiving dinner to those who have nowhere else to go. For the past 11 years, Bishop Loverde has joined the efforts at Christ House during the holidays. He will again take part in preparing and serving meals with the volunteers on Thanksgiving Day.
