Pope Francis names Reverend Paul F. deLadurantaye as “Chaplain to His Holiness” and Monsignor

Most Rev. Michael Burbidge has issued the following statement:

“With great joy, I write to inform you that our Holy Father Pope Francis has named Paul F. deLadurantaye a “Chaplain to His Holiness” with the title “Monsignor.” This is a recognition of Monsignor deLadurantaye's faithful and generous priestly and loyal service to the Universal Church and honors him and our entire diocese. Please join me in congratulating Monsignor deLadurantaye and in offering our prayerful support.”

The honor comes as Rev. Paul F. deLadurantaye is returning to the diocese following a five-year appointment to the English section of the Vatican Secretariat of State. Bishop Burbidge has appointed Monsignor deLadurantaye to serve as Chancellor, effective August 5.

Biography

Born in Washington, D.C., Monsignor deLadurantaye attended Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington and studied for the priesthood at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Pennsylvania and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Ordained by Pope St. John Paul II in 1988, Monsignor deLadurantaye served at St. Bernadette in Springfield and then as Associate Director of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington before earning his licentiate and doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family. He served in a variety of capacities at Queen of Apostles in Alexandria and at Holy Spirit in Annandale. Monsignor deLadurantaye was on the faculty of the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College in Front Royal and the Marymount University Catholic School Leadership Program in Arlington. He belongs to the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, was on the board of trustees at Catholic International University, served on the Presbyteral Council, and was a member of the College of Consultors. He served as a judge in the diocesan tribunal and was the diocesan censor, reviewing texts for doctrinal accuracy. He has published several articles in Catholic journals including the Homileticand Pastoral Review, The Linacre Quarterly, The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, and Teologia i Moralnos. 

Before being appointed to the Vatican, Monsignor deLadurantaye served as Secretary for Catechetics and Sacred Liturgy for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.
